The German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ) is the central simulation and data processing facility for the German climate and Earth System modelling community and is one of the leading facilities in this area. DKRZ not only operates supercomputers in the highest performance class and one of the largest data and archive systems worldwide, we also participate in many national and international projects aiming to improve the software and infrastructure for climate modelling.

Job Opening: Research Software Engineer for Climate Data Analyses (all genders)

The Data Analysis department within the German Climate Computing Center is looking for a Research Software Engineer for Climate Data Analyses to work on software solutions for a Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation project (RegIKlim) funded by the German Ministry for Education and Research. This work aims at supporting high-resolution climate model developers as well as connecting various climate change
related projects across different German municipalities by providing a common data analysis and search platform. More information is available at

The bulk of the research is centered on the systems of the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ), a leading facility for climate and Earth system modeling. RegiKlim offers centralized data and evaluation tools access through the Freva system (more information available at https://www-regiklim.dkrz.de and https://github.com/FREVA-CLINT/freva). As the Software and Data Coordinator, you'll manage the infrastructure and ensure smooth access to datasets and evaluation tools, supporting the project's success.

Key Responsibilities:

Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team
Develop and enhance the infrastructure and software of a data search and analysis platform
Support researchers in developing and applying their data analysis plugins as well as developing solutions to search for various types of data across different storage locations via a common data search engine
Coordinate requirements with diverse project partners from across Germany, ranging from Climate Modellers and hydrologists to City Planners and Civic Engineers
You’ll also be working with various distributed system technologies like dask, docker, binder, Kubernetes on virtual machines and the HPC system alike

Qualifications:

· You have a master level degree in computer science, natural science or a comparable education with a
focus on information technology
· Interests in the field of climate science
· You have solid experience in programming with python. Additional experience in any other
programming language is a plus
o Desirable: version control (Gitlab/GitHub), web frontend development (django, JS), search
engines (Apache Solr), database system (MariaDB), HPC systems, distributed system
technologies (dask, docker, binder, kubernetes) on virtual machines OR similar software
experience and knowledge
· Excellent written and verbal English communication skills. German is a plus.
· Any experience in web frontend development is a plus, but not a must-have.
· Excellent communication and organizational skills to coordinate activities and disseminate knowledge
effectively

modern office right in the heart of Hamburg

Duration and Work Plan:

The position is based at the Data Analysis department within the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ) in Hamburg. The role is part of the RegIKlim II project, starting July 2024 until April 2026. Payment will be in accordance with the German public service positions (TVöD-Bund according to the applicant’s qualification), including extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment follow those of the German civil service.
